Walter Bradford Cannon, an American physiologist, was the person who coined the term fight or flight response.  His theory states that animals react to frightful/threatening situations with an activation of the sympathetic nervous system.  In a response to fear, animals (including humans) will have nerve stimulation in the brain which will then cause an increase in adrenal production.  There will be a myriad of symptoms including and not limited to: elevated heart rate, shaking, tunnel vision, loss of hearing, and heightened awareness.  All of this will help you in either fighting or fleeing.

Upon researching this I found some pretty rad high speed videos of insects by Andrew Mountcastle that you might enjoy.  LINK

(My video was made outside the Kadavul Hindu Temple in Kauai.  My heart rate was elevated just watching the scene unfold!)
