“I think it is important to know that a man or woman, writer or not, can find more isolation in Los Angeles than in Boise, Idaho. Or, all things being fair, he can with a telephone (if he has a telephone) have 19 people over drinking and talking with him within an hour and a half. I have bummed the cities and I know this- the great facility of Los angeles is that one can be alone if one wishes or he can be in a crowd if he wishes. No other city seems to allow this easy double choice as well. This is a fairly wonderful miracle, especially if one is a writer.” - Charles Bukowski
I was lucky enough to see a lecture at Art Center given by Paul Vangelisti on the idea of place. It was so good that I immediately went home and emailed him for his lecture notes (which he so kindly sent me – email me if you are interested in them). I then bought one of his books, L.A Exile which is where I found the above quote.
I really love Los Angeles.
start your love affair / re-watch this over winter / get the book

Thought provoking quote. It is certainly true that in Los Angeles one can enjoy solitude or being around many people (I don’t have nineteen friends). We are also most fortunate that with Los Angeles as a hub one can venture forth to explore not only cultural activities but go to the sea, mountains and desert to refresh the spirit and mind.
Very cool Stefani. I’m with you, I really love Los Angeles as well. I’m going to email you about those lecture notes now. Have you ever been on the Bukowski tour of L.A.?
I haven’t been but I have always wanted to go on an esoteric tour.
