I can’t say enough good things about Miwa Matreyek. Let’s just sum it up by saying that she herself is as stunning as the work she makes.
Read a review of Miwa’s recent performance of Myth and Infrastructure at REDCAT that describes her “exploring blinking cityscapes like a gentle King Kong” by clicking here.
And then watch a reel of her work here.
Name 3 things that inspire you: Music. The way things move. My surroundings/domestic impulses.
If you could fly anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? I can only think in practical, realistic answers, and I just looked these two places up today on Orbitz – too expensive: 1) to NY to hang out with my friend Eric Lindley who is on summer vacation and working part time on a farm, or 2) to Portland where Anna Oxygen will be soon hanging out at her river cabin.
What was your favorite band in high school? I was waaay behind on music /band knowledge (didn’t “get it” until college and really listened to Belle and Sebastian/RadioHead). I loosely listened to radio with top-40 stuff in high school, but couldn’t tell you if there was anything that stood out to me back then. I was much more invested in the music I was playing with my youth symphony (I played viola) and was all about Russia’s great composers – Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Rimsky Korsakov, etc.
Thank you, Miwa!

Miwa is so amazing and I’m glad you introduced me to her work. I like these types of questions because it helps me get to know people better. I look forward to seeing more of her art in the future … maybe even with Sunny!
I like these kinds of questions too for interviews because they are reflective of the things I wonder about people and the way they think. So glad we got to experience her performance together that night.
Exactly to both of you. Interviews! Miwa! Seeing performances together!
